Stanley Works was founded by Frederick Trent Stanley in 1843 in New Britain, Connecticut. It was originally a bolt and door hardware manufacturing company.
On March 12, 2010, Stanley Works merged with Black & Decker to become Stanley Black and Decker.
Interestingly, Stanley brand wet/dry vacuums are manufactured by Alton Industry Ltd., whereas Stanley Black & Decker manufactured CRAFTSMAN vacuums. When Sears went out of business, Stanley Black & Decker purchased the CRAFTSMAN brand, but then at some point moved manufacturing of the CRAFTSMAN brand vacuums to Emerson Electric Co.
